Join us for our weekly meeting in person at The Grill located at 2401 W Cypress Creek Rd, Bldg 1, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309
Each week, the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale Cypress Creek invites a keynote speaker from the community or a Rotarian to share information about programs, businesses, and projects that support local education, communities, economies, and global initiatives like fighting diseases, providing clean water, promoting peace, and saving mothers & children.
Our speaker this week will be Ed Lamont, who will be discussing “Planting Palm Beach”.
When the Providencia, a small Spanish brigantine, wrecked on the Atlantic shore of the Lake Worth Region in 1878, everything changed. Its cargo of 20,000 coconuts was salvaged, then planted by frontier settlers giving the region a distinctive look and eventually a new name – Palm Beach. Royal Poinciana, Kapok, and Yellow Tabs later added to the area’s semi-tropical splendor.
Where did these exotics come from? How did Palm beach emerge from a mangrove covered swamp to become a showcase of horticultural resort beauty? Who planted Palm Beach?
